This paper describes AUTO-MATE, a complete computer based modular ship bridge equipment package that applies the most advanced digital techniques to solving today's problems for profitable safe commercial ship operation. AUTO-MATE provides the deck officer direct assistance in performing several of his primary ship duties. This includes fully automatic radar plotting, fully automatic navigation and route keeping, fully automatic continuous situation recording, load planning and monitoring, and payroll accounting and inventory. The unique operational feature of the AUTO-MATE system is twin identical computers. This allows collision avoidance and navigation functions the full uncompromising use of all computer processing time and provides a total system reliability that meets ship world- wide operating requirements. Both computers have the capability to perform collision avoidance and navigation simultaneously. This provides complete back-up in case of failure at sea and gives continuous available of all automatic functions.
