ARCTIC ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES

Arctic Environment and Resources is a data reference book of practical significance to those concerned with the Arctic, whether they are students, researchers, industrialists, or government administrators. The book is divided into Part I, Arctic Environment, and Part II, Arctic Resources. Part I was written by John Sater; it takes up about two-thirds of the book, and presents the latest available information on the Arctic environment. Concisely but exhaustively covered are geophysics, atmospherics, sea ice, the Arctic Ocean (the ocean, its seas and tributaries), climate, and terrain. Part II, Arctic Resources, takes its factual data from a Systems Research Corporation report issued in 1970, which was coauthored by L.C. Van Allen; the information was updated by A.G. Ronhovde in 1971. This part describes in considerable detail the known and potential resources in the Arctic areas of Russia, the Scandinavian countries (including Greenland), Canada, and the United States (Alaska). The authors examine natural resources, population, transportation, industry, manufacturing, hydroelectric power potential, agriculture, and forestry. The concluding chapter, by A.G. Ronhovde, discusses the probable future significance of these resources to the economies of Arctic countries, and assesses the impact these resources, especially oil and gas, will have on world markets. Considering the rapid development now evident in Arctic areas, the information in Arctic Environment and Resources should prove very valuable to an understanding of the physical and economic problems that must be dealt with before development of the Arctic can proceed. And the book's inventory of the vast Arctic energy potential makes clear the reasons for current concern, in both North America and Eurasia, with solutions to those problems.
