VALUE FOR MONEY MEASURES FOR REHABILITATING PAVEMENT SURFACINGS
Today engineers involved in road works face the challenge of designing and constructing suitable cost effective rehabilitation treatments for the vast network of roads in Queensland. Department of Transport, Queensland (Australia) has been involved in extensive research and development in the field of pavement rehabilitation, with an aim of establishing cost effective treatments. Major trials and performance studies include cement treated base (CTB) pavements tested by the Australian made Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF), evaluation of crack control products including geotextile and polymer modified seals, mix design, construction and performance studies on hot in- place asphalt recycling and polymer modified asphalt. From these performance studies, hot in-place asphalt recycling and paving fabrics rank highly as value for money measures for rehabilitation of pavement surfacings. The department has produced a number of technical notes and guidelines. As well, several training sessions and workshops have been conducted for dissemination of technical information obtained from these trials and from routine research and development work. This research, coupled with the user demand for documentation of rehabilitation techniques, led to compilation and publication of a Pavement Rehabilitation Manual in June 91. The aim of this paper is therefore two fold. Firstly, it aims to highlight the department's experiences with two of the major value for money rehabilitation treatments for pavement surfacings, namely hot in- place asphalt recycling and pavement fabrics, and, secondly, to give an overview of the Pavement Rehabilitation Manual.
