THE ARCTIC BASIN

In one of its activities in 1960 the Institute undertook an analysis of environmental factors affecting operations in the Arctic Basin. To accomplish the study the Institute called upon many specialists in the fields of arctic operations and arctic research to present their views of what was known about the Arctic and man's ability to operate there. While the main body of the report was addressed to the U.S. Army, a significant amount of material was collected as an annex to the report and subsequently published by the Institute in a volume entitled The Arctic Basin. As a result of the recent developments in arctic research and development, the Institute, in 1966, entered into another agreement with U.S. Army for a study of logistical operations in arctic and polar regions in the light of present capabilities and techniques. As had been done before, a thorough assessment of current scientific and operational knowledge was made and, on the basis of this information, a specific report on arctic logistics was submitted to the Army in 1968. This volume constitutes the data on which the report was based. In general, if follows the pattern established in the first edition of The Arctic Basin. Statements setting forth the status of knowledge as of 1967-68 were prepared by knowledgeable individuals and reviewed by their peers. Under the guidance of an Institute Advisory Committee the materials were then edited into their present form. The results will be of value to the informed reader who wishes to obtain a general knowledge of the Arctic Ocean basin and the lands that surround it, together with the living conditions therein and the operational capacity of our society to function in the region.
