MECHANICAL STRESSES IN PAVEMENT BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

SOLLICITATIONS MECANIQUES DES ENROBES DANS LES CHAUSSEES

The authors review the present knowledge of stresses to which bituminous mixtures are subjected, knowledge obtained from mathematical calculations, experimental data, and comparison of both. To calculate stresses due to traffic, several calculation programs exist (alize 3 at the LCPC). The fundamental assumptions used are defined (elastic and linear materials, non-finite half-space subgrade, non-finite plane pavement layers, each layer being a slab characterized by its thickness and poisson's coefficient). As regards experimental methods, dynamic deflections can be measured at the surface by means of deflection sensors. Inside the pavement, horizontal deformations and vertical stresses can also be measured. The present knowledge of stresses, to which bituminous mixtures are subjected, can be resumed as follows: (1) there exists a very good qualitative agreement between measurement results and results derived from the models. To go beyond this qualitative agreement means an accurate adjustment of the numerical values of the moduli of bituminous mixtures and of the subgrade. (3) for bituminous mixtures, it will be possible to introduce in the calculations various values corresponding to various possible cases.
