MODULES ET CARACTERISTIQUES DE RUPTURE DES ENROBES BITUMINEUX

The authors recall that the study of moduli and Poisson's ratio is conducted by means of several methods. The dynamic method consists in using alternate bending or the alternate tensile-compression test; the complex modulus and the complex poisson's ratio (tension-compression) are determined, the test parameter used being the frequency of the applied sinusoidal stress, which represents the first harmonic of a stress caused in a pavement by a moving load. The static method consists in using a degree of tensile or compressive deformation. The relaxation modulus and the Poisson's ratio are determined as a function of the duration of load application; the dynamic response can then also be deduced. The semi-dynamic method utilizes the imposed speed test, which enables the relaxation modulus to be obtained in a narrow time range for a test carried out at a given speed. The ultimate tensile test is also conducted at a given deformation rate and enables the maximum corresponding stress, deformation and load application time to be determined. The results obtained are compared with those of the Brazilian test (biaxial). The influence of loading time and temperature on the modulus and Poisson's ratio and ultimate tensile properties is investigated together with the relation between these values and the bitumen modulus, the influence of the percentage of voids on the moduli, the influence of the filler content on the failure strength. An investigation is carried out into the effect of deformability characteristics of the material on the behaviour of pavements: to achieve this aim the results obtained with a mathematical model are compared with those of non-destructive tests on pavements.
