TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT

The future development of telecommunications must be taken into account in predicting future patterns of transport. Demand for transport can be broadly classified into four categories of purpose, which differ greatly as regards suitability for replacement by telecommunications: shopping, work, business, pleasure. The implications of advances in telecommunications for each type of trip are considered in turn. It is concluded that whatever changes may occur, telecommunication is most unlikely to replace the need for travel altogether. The number of the covering abstract of the textbook is IRRD abstract No. 212297. /TRRL/
