HOW INDIANA IMPROVES WORK-ZONE SAFETY

It is noted that the indirect costs relating to all types of construction accidents amount to 6.5% of the total construction dollar. To reduce this wastage, Indiana formed a joint task force of contractors and state people to address the issue. Prephase site construction meetings, that had been previously found to be very effective in promoting safety, were required to be set up and conducted by the contractor prior to the beginning of work on each major work phase. The meetings are designed to improve the quality of construction, improve personnel safety on the site, and the safety of the traveling public. Off-duty police were found to be very effective in slowing motorists. Indiana passed a law to implement a 45-mph speed limit when warning lights are flashing. Other speed control devices are noted including fluorescent orange construction sheeting for the construction signs, and thermal plastic rumble strips to slow drivers.
