WIND RESISTANT DESIGN OF A BRIDGE MEMBER WITH AN H-SHAPED CROSS SECTION

The author summarizes the results of a survey of 141 arch bridges, (Langer type bridges), and describes wind tunnel tests on h-shaped section models. The wind stability characteristics of h-shaped beams are classified according to the results obtained in the wind tunnel tests. Three ways of increasing wind resistability are listed: 1. Decrease in the dynamic lift coefficient, 2. Increase in the structural damping capacity, 3. Increase in the dead weight of the structure. Further work is suggested.
