TAMING THE URBAN UNDERGROUND

The paper discusses problems affecting excavation and support systems in urban areas. Problems created by adjacent structures and utilities, as well as disposal of contaminated soil and ground water are discussed, and possible solutions are considered. In selecting earth retention systems, a contractor must consider the location and nature of all utilities and structures adjacent to or within the excavation site. In some cases pit undperpinning techniques must be used when installing such retention systems. Problems associated with such systems are discussed. Problems posed by large-diameter sewers or transit tunnels located beneath the excavation are also discussed. Guidelines to help maintain utility services and protect adjacent structures are presented. Factors to consider when dewatering are noted, and the disposing of discharge and spoil is discussed.
