NATIONAL COOPERATIVE HIGHWAY RESEARCH PROGRAM. SUMMARY OF PROGRESS THROUGH 1975

The formulation, financing and administration of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program's contract research projects are detailed, the status of projects of FY'63 through '76 are outlined, and the unpublished reports of two projects are summarized. The projects are grouped in 22 general areas which include pavements, economics, traffic planning, roadside development, safety, testing and instrumentation, etc. The NCHRP's systematic planning for getting research results into practice is described, and examples of how such results have been utilized are reviewed. NCHRP's policy ensures miximum exposure of the research while in progess in the hope that the results will quickly find their way into practice in the form of policies, specifications, and standards of State highway and transportation departments. The results are summarized of projects (12-1 and 12-6) on permanent deflections and loss of camber in steel bridge beams, and the conclusions are lessted. Project 15-2 on the design to control erosion in roadside drainage channels is also outlined.
