ANAHEIM'S INTEGRATED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. CURRENT STATUS OF INTEGRATION

In 1986, the city of Anaheim embarked on a project to install a computerized traffic management system to address the growing concern for traffic congestion in the Commercial Recreation Area. Phase I of the Traffic Management System program included the construction of a Traffic Management Center (TMC), installation of a UTCS computer controlled signal system with real-time graphics for an initial 118 signalized intersections, construction of closed circuit television cameras at 8 locations, installation of Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) and the planned construction of Changeable Message Signs (CMS) at seven locations. This paper describes the equipment installed for traffic engineering and police personnel with the Traffic Management Center to accommodate real-time operation of the traffic management system.
