HOW TO MAKE COMMITTEES MORE EFFECTIVE

Since the manner in which committees are formed and operated has a significant effect on the results obtained, this report gives some guidelines on why, when, and how to form a committee, along with some ways in which to ensure that it culminates in an effective report. Illustrations are provided of situations in which the use of a committee would be suitable and of situations when a committee should not be used. Information is also provided on the selection of committee members, committee size, and the choice of a chairman. Concerning committee operations, the following are pointed out: (1) a friendly atmosphere should be established; (2) regularly scheduled meetings should be established; and (3) all valid alternative should be considered.
