HOV LANE FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN AREA
As part of an effort to add a potential HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lane to the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago, a regional HOV lane feasibility study was intitiated. The study attempted to identify candidate facilities and further investigate their HOV potential. This article describes the background to the study, the screening guidelines for HOV candidate corridors (congestion; potential time savings; demand; capacity improvement; transit impact). The details of the findings are summarized, including the transit impact findings. Preliminary conclusions drawn from the studies are also presented.
