Switzerland will build two $10.7 billion, north-south trans-Alpine tunnels to integrate the country's freight lines: a 31-mile tunnel through Gotthard mountain; a 19-mile tunnel through the Loetschberg mountains. The tunnels will tie together existing freight lines, some of which will be upgraded, and new tracks that are part of a national expansion called Bahn 2000. The project will begin in 1996 and could take up to 20 years to complete at a cost that will be at least twice that which is projected.
