TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MARYLAND FOR THE 90'S AND BEYOND

This paper explains the intricacies of managing growing traffic in suburban Montgomery County, Maryland. To manage the county's roadway system on a daily basis a Traffic Management Unit (TMU) was created within the Division of Traffic Engineering to develop and implement a vigorous traffic management program. All of the approximately 600 existing traffic signals maintained by the county are under computer control. Plans are underway to develop and implement an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). Award of a contract took place in the spring of 1992 with system acceptance scheduled for 18 months later. The ATMS will use advanced technology and software applications to provide high speed analysis, simulation, monitoring, and control.
