A CONCEPTUAL OVERVIEW OF ADVANCE

ADVANCE (Advanced Driver and Vehicle Advisory Navigation Concept) is a joint venture involving the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois Universities Transportation Research Consortium (Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago), and Motorola. Financial and other support for ADVANCE is provided by FHWA, IDOT, and numerous private commercial sources interested in participating in the program. ADVANCE will implement a large-scale field demonstration and evaluation of dynamic route guidance system concepts. When full deployed, the ADVANCE system will involve some 5,000 vehicles operating within about a 200 square mile test area in northwest suburban Chicago. Each vehicle will be equipped with a navigation system capable of dynamic route selection and route guidance.
