SMART BUS IN THE SMARTER WORLD GERMAN "SMART BUS" TECHNOLOGIES: LESSONS FOR THE UNITED STATES
Traffic congestion is expected to escalate, the State of Oregon and the Portland region recognize this problem, and that it will be compounded by a population surge expected over the next 20 years. In response, Tri-Met, the transit district in Portland, Oregon, has developed a draft Strategic Plan which would more than triple transit ridership by 2015. The problem is how to increase the use of multi-occupant vehicles in suburban areas at costs that are reasonable to customers and taxpayers. With a grant from the U.S. Office of Technical Assistance and Safety, Tri-Met has been researching the German "Smart Bus" approach to this problem and attempting to determine what would be applicable to the United States environment.
