COLD WEATHER TRANSIT TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM. VOLUME 3: DEVELOPMENT AND TEST OF THE RADIO FREQUENCY THIRD RAIL DEICER SYSTEM. FINAL REPORT

ElectroCom Automation L.P., under contract from the University of Notre Dame designed, built, and tested the RF Third Rail Deicing System for removing ice from a transit system third rail. The system used industrial induction heating techniques adapted for use on a rail vehicle. During field tests it successfully removed ice at speeds up to twenty miles per hour and removed ice with thickness up to one-fourth inch.
