The objective of the Third International Symposium on Snow Removal and Ice Control Technology is to provide a forum for the exchange of information about the state-of-the-art research and technology applications to improve snow removal and ice control operations in transportation systems. The preprints contained in this document (Volume 1 and Volume 2) were prepared by engineers, meteorologists, professors and researchers from Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. The papers have not been peer reviewed or edited. They are grouped under the following headings: 1) policy and management, 2) materials and applications techniques, 3) environmental considerations, 4) drift control, 5) future directions in snow removal and ice control research, 6) snow and ice removal equipment, 7)pavement surface condition, 8) safety and operations, 9) visibility, 10) road weather systems, and 11) weather forecasting. The symposium was conducted by the Transportation Research Board in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Permanent International Association of Road Congresses, Standing International Road Weather Commission, and the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory.
