SUITABILITY OF PAINTING FILM FOR INERT GAS SYSTEM

A report on the investigation of the performances of paint applied to inert gas system that is, the influence of SO2 gas concentration, volume of the gas supplied, period supplied and CO2 gas and normal air supplied, for explosion- proof in cargo oil tank. (1) Alkyl-silicate type ZRP (zinc rich paint) was affected mainly by SO2 gas in inert gas. The effect was not caused by SO2 concentration (ppm) in the gas but it was related to the total SO2 gas supplied into tank, i.e., the absolute volume of SO2. (2) Different from SO2, both alkali-silicate and alkyl-silicate ZRP film in CO2 gas atmosphere form zinc carbonate insoluble in water, but alkali-silicate ZRP has a greater uncertain element that is affected by CO2 having a large absolute volume of alkali-silicate in inert gas. (3) The corrosion rate of SS41 steel at the time of normal air showed a value comparable with SO2 gas 300 cc/0.5m3/day. (4) No defect was found of epoxy and tar-epoxy paints.
