USE OF ELECTRONIC SIGNAL SYSTEMS FOR CAR TRAFFIC CONTROL IN TOWNS

PRIMJENA ELEKTRONICKIH SIGNALNIH SISTEMA U UPRAVLJANJU AUTOMOBILSKIM PROMETOM U GRADOVIMA

A method for defining traffic control signal plans on local intersections as well as traffic control in traffic areas is dealt with. The method itself includes design of signal plans based on data concerning traffic load and constructional, traffic and exploitational characteristics of a junction. Based on signal plans covering all junctions in the area of traffic control and on the demands of traffic flows, control plans for the whole traffic area are defined. Design of a signal plan for a particular junction includes: a) safety analysis; b) calculation of traffic capacity, and c) calculation of traffic signals cycle time and distribution of green split settings for particular traffic loads. The method has been used for two junctions in the central area of the town of Zagreb and the results obtained together with the signal plan are presented. Analysis of the central area of the town of Zagreb has been performed by means of the TRANSYT method in order to determine signal plans for traffic control.
