THE PLACE OF THE UNIVERSITY IN FURTHERING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE USE OF UNDERGROUND SPACE

The unique role of the university in the preservation, dissemination and advancement of knowledge pertaining to present and future developments and uses of subsurface space and excavation technology is recognized. An attempt is made to outline several of the responsibilities the academy has assumed in order to maintain an equal partnership with industry and the undergorund space industry, and preserve its leadership role in the areas of research and training. These responsibilities are as follows: providing a forum for discussion; shaping models for effective and mutually beneficial university-industry interaction; promoting collaboration between the academician and the industrial practioner; training the professionals; and furthering research. In the last area in which the university is most qualified with expertise, it is helping in developing a research base, improving opportunities for grant and contract support from private and public and funding agencies, developing capabilities for an interdisciplinary approach, and in creating an institute for underground space study. It is noted that in the future greater significance will be attached to patterns of development and their study by socio-behavioral scientists, layers, geographers, health scientists, economists and environmentalists.
