FIELD EVALUATION OF MARYLAND MIX #8 OVERLAY ON BRIDGE DECKS. INTERIM REPORT
The research work performed by the Maryland State Highway Administration in cooperation with the FHWA showed that Maryland Mix #6, currently used for new bridge deck construction, is as good as LSDC and LMC. Maryland Mix #6 was modified so that it can be used for overlay purposes. This mix was designated as Maryland Mix #8. To date Mix #8 overlay has been placed on three bridge decks all of which have been in service for less than two years. The two years of performance indicated no delamination (good bond) and good resistance to the chloride penetration. However, since all three decks have shown different behavior to date, with respect to the corrosion activity, no conclusion can be made for corrosion of embedded rebars. Plastic shrinkage cracks are visible on the Route 118 bridge but are not detrimental at this stage. Rideability of all three decks is good.
