CONCRETE MIXTURES. HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE FOR NORTH SEA PLATFORMS

Norwegians have used high strength concrete for offshore structures in the North Sea since 1973. The critical demands of such concretes due to high strength, durability, and constructibility requirements, the magnitude of the structures, and the rate of construction, and the special cements and pozzolans, hydraulicallly processed sand, and refined superplasticizers and other chemical admixtures that have been developed are discussed in this paper. The paper discusses the areas of constructibility, cement, pozzolans such as silica fume, aggregates, chemical admixtures (water-reducing, retarding, accelerating).
