ROLL-OVER CRASHWORTHINESS OF A THREE-DIMENSIONAL VEHICLE FRAME. SECOND NATIONAL STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING CONFERENCE, ADELAIDE, 3-5 OCTOBER 1990; PREPRINTS OF PAPERS

Recently there has been some discussion as to whether structural engineers should become involved in the design and government regulation of vehicle sub-structures, particularly with regard to increasing occupant protection safety. This paper illustrates one example why they should become involved. It shows how a rugged terrain vehicle (driver/passenger) cabin, modelled as a three-dimensional frame of thin-walled profiles, behaves on a roll-over accident. The frame was found to be inadequately designed. Because of this, the authors suggest the Australian Design Rules be amended to include structural crashworthiness clauses (similar in format to structural SAA codes) specifying a minimum level of collision or accident performance for vehicles, and that structural engineers become involved in formulating these rules. For the covering entry of the conference see IRRD 831067. (Author/TRRL)
