A method of analysis for the shakedown limit is presented suitable for the ultimate limit state design of bridges. It uses existing load and resistance factors and the envelope of elastic bending moments. It leads to a solution which behaves elastically after an initial phase of plastic deformation. Types of variable repeated load are classified indicating their contribution to collapse. A case study of a composite bridge over two spans demonstrates the limited ductility requirements, the need to establish the correct load distribution between girders, and the insight that can be gained into the best construction method to ensure that the limit state is attained in a ductile manner.
