INTERGOVERNMENTAL TASK FORCE ON ALTERNATIVE DE-ICERS : SOLID DE-ICING CHEMICAL TARGET DOCUMENT . PROCEEDINGS OF THE 1989 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ROADS AND TRANSPORTATION ASSOCIATION OF CANADA, CALGARY, ALBERTA, SEPTEMBER 17-21, 1989
The objectives of this task force were as follows: 1) to challenge private industry with a target document to produce a cost-effective, environmentally benign roadway de-icer; 2) to take the onus off municipalities to identify, research and demonstrate new roadway de-icers; and 3) to reduce the potentially redundant research and field trials performed by municipalities. This paper presents that target document, which includes specifications for effects on water quality, soil and vegetation, vehicle corrosion, degradation of engineering structures and operational effectiveness.
