HOW CAN RAILROADS RECAPTURE LOST MARKET SHARE? IN: PROCEEDINGS OF THE THIRTY-THIRD ANNUAL MEETING, TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH FORUM, OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 2, 1991, NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

While railroads achieved impressive profit gains in the 1980s through cost containment, it is likely that this source of profits will increase less rapidly in the 1990s. Perhaps a more fruitful approach would be to pursue strategies designed to enhance revenue by recapturing lost market share of manufactured products. Answering this question is the central objective of this paper. Specific objectives include the following: (1) Develop models of rail-truck market share for selected manufactured products. (2) Suggest railroad price and service strategies that could raise rail market share of manufactured goods.
