SAND AND GRAVEL EXTRACTION. FIRST (INTERIM) REPORT OF THE KENT AND EAST SUSSEX SAND AND GRAVEL WORKING PARTY AND REPORT OF THE NORTHERN LONDON GRAVEL WORKING PARTY, WITH AN INTRODUCTORY MEMORANDUM BY THE CONFERENCE SECRETARIAT

This publication includes the first (interim) report of the Kent and East Sussex sand and gravel working party, the report of the northern London gravel working party and a memorandum by the secretary of the conference. Three interim reports by a total of seven working parties covering the south eastern region have already been published as has the final report of one of them. These reports describe studies, the objectives of which were to establish the facts of local supply and demand situations with respect to sand and gravel and to investigate the possibilities of reducing the need for them in order to avoid further environmental damage. The Kent and E. Sussex report includes a description of the area concerned, estimates of reserves and average yields of land won materials, estimates of reserves of marine-dredged aggregates, information on outside sources of materials, figures relating to the restoration of worked out land and estimates of the supply/demand situation up to 1980. It includes conclusions and recommendations for further work. The north London report discusses future demand, the supply situation and compares the two. It refers to saga's view that there should be a total pool of permitted land for extraction over a reasonable period and the need for annual monitoring of the factual position. /TRRL/
