CALIBRATION CORNER. DON'T LET PLANTS DESTROY ROADWAY
The presence of vegetation growing out or crcks and seams within any paved road surface reduces the effective life of the roadway. The article recommends the application of an herbicide to the base material before the final surfacing of roadways. Few herbicides are, however, specifically registered for use under pavements. It may be necessary to contact the herbicide formulator and request a supplemental label authorizing such use. Herbicides that inhibit root cell developement are noted. The first foot of pavement along the edge of a roadway is most vulnerable to flexation of fractures and plant life invasion. Post-emergent translocating herbicides are best under such circumstances.
