RESEARCH NEWS. THE EFFECTS OF ABRASIVES ON COATING PERFORMANCE: SSPC'S PACE ALTERNATE SURFACE PREPARATION BRANCH

A research program called PACE (Performance of Alternate Coatings in the Environment) is described, and its results are presented and discussed. It was prompted by concerns about the effect on coating performance of regulations limiting the volatile organic compound (VOC) content and use of heavy anti-corrosive pigments. The study focused on alternative materials and techniques that would minimize the impact of protective coating applications on the environment, e.g. VOC coatings, non-toxic pigmentation, and alternative abrasives. Long-term evaluations of coatings were performed under different field conditions. The performance was examined of 6 coating systems applied to 24 surface finishes exposed at 3 exterior sites. Study findings are tabulated and discussed.
