NEWS FROM THE FIELD. NY/NJ PORT AUTHORITY REMOVES LEAD-BASED PAINT WITH DUSTLESS POWER TOOLS

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is using a dustless power tool system that eliminates the need for containment structures, to remove thick layers of lead-based paint from several bridges. The system consists of up to 3 shrouded needle guns attached by hoses to a vacuum device, which pulls paint debris into drums for future waste disposal. Crews are currently working on the Bayonne Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel Roadway Overpass, and the Goethals and George Washington Bridges. Several safety practices have been mandated for coating removal with the dustless power tools. Such tools provide an SSPC-SP 3 finish on the steel. After paint removal, dry abrasive blasting using coal slag abrasives is performed to achieve an SSPC-SP 6 finish.
