IN THE PUBLIC EYE... OPERATION KENNEDY THE PUBLIC RELATIONS COMPONENT OF HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION

In the Chicago metropolitan region, past experience has shown that public relations is a critical element in the success of major rehabilitation projects. So, when reconstruction work started on the Kennedy Expressway, a public relations strategy was put in place which included a public information program and a number of other elements. These elements are summarized in this article. Called 'Operation Kennedy,' the information program had 5 goals. Advance work on paved shoulders and streets which will be used as alternate routes is also noted. Public transit enhancements were made to encourage motorists to use the system. Action to improve emergency response systems, coordination with other projects, and lane closures were also included in the strategy.
