ALABAMA'S NEW BRIDGE LOAD TESTING SECTION CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE POSTING OF BRIDGES
The benefits of routinely load testing bridges to evaluate and rate them are noted. The Alabama Highway Department, due to the critical bridge situation in the state, entered into an experimental program to load test five posted bridges. On completion of the test, four of the bridges had their postings removed, and the fifth was deemed capable of carrying full legal loads following completion of the repair of an abutment. The success of the program led to the beginning of an in-house load test program, and posting has been removed from 11 additional bridges. The currently used methodology for load testing bridges in Alabama is summarized.
