DAMAGE DIAGNOSIS OF STEEL FRAMES USING VIBRATIONAL SIGNATURE ANALYSIS

The paper presents a diagnostic technique for locating the damage in steel structures. The study recorded and analyzed vibration signals to detect the structural damage, and examined structural diagnosis techniques using the displacement mode shapes (DMS) and the strain mode shapes (SMS). This was done by introducing 6 different damage conditions separately in a model steel structure. It is noted that DMS can identify global changes of the structure at certain degrees of freedom but is not always sensitive, and SMS shows excellent sensitivity to detect local damages.
