LOAD-DURATION EFFECTS IN STRUCTURAL LUMBER: STRAIN ENERGY APPROACH

The load-duration behavior of structural lumber is described using a critical strain-energy-density failure criterion. A critical strain-energy density is identified through extensive load tests in various environments. The study used select structural and No. 2 grade Douglas-fir nominal 2 in. by 4 in. lumber. A model was used to predict the observed load-duration behavior of the Douglas-fir lumber. The details of the study are described.
