It is noted that project specifications are easier to interpret than the engineering drawings in a court of law, and the paper gives guidelines to help engineers write good specifications. The importance of studying the details of the proposed work and the plan is emphasized. Information for the contractor must be presented in a consistent form throughout the technical sections relating to the description, materials, construction details, method of measurement, and basis of payment. The importance of specification language is noted. Improperly used words, and words and terms with ambiguous meanings are discussed.
