Searching for the ultimate bridge overlay, this article considers polymer concrete, a high-tech combination of plastic binder (epoxy, polyester or methacrylate) and aggregate, icluding silica or basalt. The advantages of the material are pointed out. California, Virginia, New York, Washington and Ohio are the leading users of the technology. Two groups, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials/Associated General Contractors/American Road and Transportation Builders Association Task Force 34, and the Strategeic Highway Research Program (SHRP), will soon finalize a standard specification by mid-1993 (that the Federal Highway Administration will recognize) relating to this technology. Experiences in the various states are briefly noted.
