INTELLIGENT VEHICLE HIGHWAY SYSTEMS. A PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP. AN OVREVIEW OF THE IVHS PROGRAM THROUGH FY 1991

The need for intelligent vehicle highway systems is discussed, as well as the goals and benefits of a national IVHS program. The program participants are identified, and the major program elements are reviewed. Program delivery activities (external and internal) are noted. The five major system areas for an IVHS program are listed and discussed in some detail: advanced traffic management systems; advanced traveler information systems; commercial vehicle operations; advanced vehicle control systems; and advanced public transportation systems. Operational tests and issues requiring investigation are also discussed.
