LONG RANGE TRANSPORTATION PLANNING FOR A NEW ERA. TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING IN A NEW ERA. ISSUE PAPERS FOR THE ITE 1992 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA
The results of a recent survey showed that the public perception of what the transportation engineering profession is producing is not good. Comments are made on the troubled process of transportation planning. The process identifies needs that exceed available funding, and there is a need to incorporate comprehensive regional planning into the procedures. The need for a good public participation process is also noted. The need for transportation planners and engineers to address the needs of a changing world is pointed out. These include the following: an aging population; the communications revolution; and population growth.
