MANDATORY TRAINING STANDARDS?
The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act' provision that requires the Federal Highway Administration to study the need for mandatory training standards for commercial truck vehicle drivers is discussed. The Professional Truck Driver Institute of America grants approval to driver training schools that meet or exceed the PTDIA traning standards. However, there is no incentive for such schools to adopt the standards if motor carriers do not hire drivers who carry their training certification. Motor carriers will most likely be required to comply with FHWA-derived standards, and complying with such standards will be most costly.
