PEDESTRIANS RIDE UP A STREET

Trudging up a narrow street rising 440 ft in a half-mile (a 1:6 slope) will be eliminated for Hong Kong pedestrians by a connected series of escalators. The transportation system breaks at cross streets, and in three flatter sections of the route, there will be sidewalks. This first installation will be evaluated as a prototype for further escalator routes connecting the upper, residential levels of Hong Kong Island with the business district on filled land at sea level. The system will have 20 esalators totaling 9.200 ft, and 440 ft of moving sidewalks. Except for three breaks, the system wil be roofed over with transluscent plastic.
