GPS/POSITIONED DIGITAL VIDEO FOR AIRBORNE GIS DATA ACQUISITION

A unique and powerful digital data collection system called Digital Video Geographic (DVG) is described. It utilizes an integration of digital video, GPS (global positioning system) satellite, gyroscope, laser, and computer technologies to produce a helicopter-based digital mapping system. The system is flown over an area of interest, and all objects captured within the record can be positioned to an accuracy of approximately 2 m. The applications described here include GIS (geographic information system) data capture, transmission line route selection and design, forest inventory, coastline mapping and geophysical reconnaissance in remote locations.
