HOWE TRUSS BEHAVIOR INTERPRETED BY DEFLECTIONS

A case study is described which shows that uncommon deflections, observed in the trusses are principally the result of damage suffered by the connections of lower chord elements. The effect of moisture changes in structural timber is not considerd to be of importance, although it can sometimes reach the order of the influence of conventional loading. It is noted that a substantial improvement of truss integrity can be achieved by inspecting connections regularly and tightening joint steel bolts and steel verticals.
