The results of a 2-year research project to determine the effectivenes of Type C steady burn warning lights show that the use of steady burn lights mounted on channelizing devices significantly influences driver behavior in some work zone configurations. Evidence was also found that the use of lights improved the performance of older test subjects. The use of lights is particularly effective in left lane closures. The drivers were able to identify lane and shoulder closures from greater distances when lights were used on channelizing devices, as opposed to the use of channelizing devices alone. The details are described of the project which included a comprehensive literature search, and national surveys to gauge the current standard practice of the use of the Type C lights. Steady burn lights were evluated both in laboratory and field tests.
