PERFORMANCE OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES SUBJECTED TO TENSILE AND COMPRESSIVE STRESSES.

PRESTAZIONE DELLE MISCELE BITUMINOSE SOTTOPOSTE A SOLLECITAZIONI DI TRAZIONE E COMPRESSIONE

This article first examines the uncertainties relating to the composition of bituminous mixtures: quality and quantity of binders, grain size characteristics of the aggregates. The optimization of the cohesion of these mixtures is then demonstrated, pointing out the influence on this property of the failure criteria adopted. Tensile, compression and Marshall tests are described. Based on the statistical analysis of experimental data, a procedure is proposed for determining the tensile strength (and cohesion if required) of the constituent materials of bituminous surfacings.
