BEARING CAPACITY OF NONHOMOGENEOUS COHESIVE SOILS UNDER EMBANKMENTS

The paper describes calculations of the bearing capacity of cohesive soil under embankments for conditions in which there is strength increase with depth and a strong crust at the surface. The analysis can account for the arbitrary horizontal component of the load generated by the horizontal thrust in the embankment. The solution to the bearing capacity can be used effectively to arrive at critical heights of embankments. The influence of reinforcement is included by reducing the magnitude of the horizontal force transmitted to the foundation soil by the force transmitted to the reinforcement. The details of the study are described, and the results are discussed.
