PULLOUT TESTS USING STEEL GRID REINFORCEMENTS WITH LOW-QUALITY BACKFILL

The paper describes laboratory and field pullout tests conducted using steel grid reinforcement with cohesive frictional backfill soils. It was found that the magnitude of the mobilized field pullout resistances as well as the strains induced in the reinforcing elements are strongly influenced by the response of the wall/embankment system to the subsoil movements and the resulting arching effects due to the presence of the inextensible reinforcements. Axial strains induced in the longitudinal bars were found to decrease linearly with the increasing distance from the face of the wall. These and other findings are discussed.
