URBAN TRANSPORT IN WEST AFRICA. IN: URBAN TRANSPORT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: LESSONS IN INNOVATION

The West Africa Region comprises 23 countries with a population of 177 million, representing 36 percent of the total population of Africa. The region contains some of the poorest countries in the world. The motorization ratein the region is very low, varying from about 5 to 15 vehicles per 1,000 population. The paper discusses the increasing role of public transport in the region.
